how to solve tough math qns blog header img
Every student has been there…

Solving hard math questions can be a challenge

Even the most experienced students face this problem as there is always a new tough math question every year during PSLE and O levels. Whether your child is working on a challenging algebra problem, or a tricky fractions question, it’s easy to get stuck and feel frustrated.

However, with the right strategies and techniques, your child can develop the skills and confidence they need to tackle even the most difficult math problems.

In this article, we will explore some effective approaches for solving hard math questions that will help your child succeed in their math studies.

According to MOE’s stance on having challenging PSLE Math questions…

Importance of having hard math questions in national exams

As much as you and your child hate having hard questions for exams, it allows students to show their mastery of the subject.

Having difficult questions allow students to build resilience. When your child has a high resilience, they are not so easily defeated when faced with life’s difficulties.

It’s easier for them to think in-depth about their problems, ultimately solving them.

Since we can’t escape…

What to do when faced with hard math questions?

Here’s 3 tips from us:

1) Break down the hard math questions

If the question has many concepts and it is long and wordy, your child can break down the information by highlighting the numbers and important keywords (such as ‘more than’ / ‘less than’ etc ).

Breaking down the question helps your child identify which concepts / topics that the question is testing so that they can recall their knowledge & practice.

Highlighting helps your child not to miss out on any important information.

2) Use visual aids

Does the question require your child to draw a model or a table? It might help them visualize the question better.

It helps to link the numbers visually and drawing it out may help you know which topics or concepts are being tested.

3) Practicing & asking for help when needed

Of course, this method does not apply when your child sits for their paper, but rather in their daily lives.

I’m sure you and your child know that practicing more math questions can help improve their Math.

However, most students make the mistake of not asking for help. Sounds strange doesn’t it?

Sometimes when your child does not understand a concept or why their answer is wrong, they may push it aside as they think it is a one time thing or they wait until it is nearing the exams and they start asking and get puzzled and lost.

It may be too late by then. What’s worse is that it is a fundamental concept that your child is unsure of and it can affect the rest of topics that are linked to this fundamental concept.

This mistake can happen to both primary & secondary students!

Asking questions can also help your child think deeper which would be useful during the exams when they are faced with hard Math questions!

The above tips take time to become a habit so…
