ChatGPT failing PSLE exams?
You have probably heard of this new AI software called “ChatGPT” and more recently, there was articles written about it being able to pass law exams BUT it failed Singapore’s PSLE exams
ChatGPT attained an average of 16/100 for the mathematics papers from the 2020 to 2022 PSLE, an average of 21/100 for the science papers and barely scraped through the English comprehension questions.
However, it could not answer the majority of questions as it could not comprehend images or charts presented. So it isn’t exactly a fair examination.

So what is ChatGPT?
It is short for Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, refers to a chatbot tool powered by artificial intelligence that has been trained to respond to user inquiries in an interactive chat interface by producing relevant content.
It’s like having a smart robot friend that you can talk to and ask anything you want.
As the time of writing this article, the software is free for everyone to use.
ChatGPT performance in PSLE questions
Here’s an example where we tried asking a popular 2017 PSLE Math question. Without the need for it to draw any graphs etc…

Turns out, it actually made the common mistake most students made.
Students must come to the realization that each ribbon roll is going to have a small portion that is unused and discarded.
110CM = 1.1M
25÷1.1=22.72 rolls needed
Here, it becomes clear that 0.72M is the remaining “scrap” from each roll which cannot be used to make a 1.1M piece of ribbon. Since 22 pieces can be made from each roll. Therefore:
200÷22=9
9+1 extra roll to account for scraps = 10
So your child shouldn’t 100% rely on ChatGPT if they need homework help (for certain subjects)…
Can I rely on ChatGPT to help my child improve their grades?
While ChatGPT can assist with revision, it’s ultimately up to your child’s ability and effort to put in the work.
Note that ChatGPT may not always be accurate and doesn’t provide sources, so you can’t verify information.
Additionally, it may not be able to explain exam questions like a teacher, who understands syllabus and exam requirements and can tailor feedback to your child’s needs.
For example, you may ask ChatGPT to explain a PSLE science question that your child got wrong and what is the correct answer.
Since it does not know what are the exam marking requirements and syllabus, it may not be able to explain it the way a teacher does it.
So what can my child use ChatGPT for?
1) Plan a study schedule
You can ask ChatGPT to plan a basic study schedule (you still have to make personal edits later) during school holidays.
This is helpful when your child does not know how to plan their time and they are not focusing on their studies during the holidays. Here’s an example:

2) Make flashcards
If your child uses flashcards or they are planning to use but don’t know how to start, this method can be helpful.
Find the content you want to use to build flashcards, then copy and paste them into ChatGPT.
Type “Create flash card for the following content.” above the content you just pasted in the chat box.
3) Summarizing class notes
If your child finds a certain topic (eg: science/geography/history) too wordy, they can use ChatGPT to summarize and put in their own notes for easy revision.
You can ask “summarize the main points of [topic information] in bullets” or “give me a summary of [topic information] within [enter a word limit]”.
4) Use it as a dictionary
Learning new words are always helpful and can be used in compositions/essays for extra marks.
When your child learns a new word, they can ask for the meaning on ChatGPT and give an example in a sentence.
Your child can then write it down and revise it so that they will apply it in their schoolwork or exams.
5) BONUS: Create Content In Multiple Languages
Sure, there’s Google Translate, but writing in one language and translating to the other means a lot of contexts and language-specific tones could be lost.
ChatGPT can create content directly in several languages. Here’s an example that we tried:

Since ChatGPT can’t improve my child’s grades directly, what can my child do?
School teachers may not have all the time in the world to guide your child personally as they have other classes to teach and work to do!
ChatGPT is unable to explain exam questions like a teacher, who understands syllabus and exam requirements and can tailor feedback to your child’s needs. So your child cannot 100% rely on that either.
That’s why we’re here to help! With the help from our tutors, your child can:
- Master trick questions
- Have a deeper understanding of different question types
- Write essays/compositions that EXAMINERS WANT
- MASTER the MUST-KNOW exam topics
