How to help your child in the English Oral exam?


The English Oral exam is tested to help build your child’s communications skills. Although it makes up 15%, it can push up your child score to an AL1 (with other components doing well also). For O level, the Oral exam takes up 30 marks and 20% weighting.

In addition, communication skills are needed when your child moves onto secondary schools, tertiary education and universities.

Where they are needed to conduct school presentations. Including when they enter the workforce, they might also conduct presentations and communicate with their colleagues during meetings.

3 ways you can help your child in the English Oral exam

  • For passage reading practices:
    • Extract a few paragraphs from the newspapers (both English and mother tongue) and ask your child to read the selected passage.
    • This helps build their pronunciation and expanding their knowledge of certain words. This can be practiced every 3 days or weekly to prevent any fatigue
  • For the conversational section:
    • Ask your child about their opinions regarding a certain news article you picked out and ask them to further elaborate their answers.
    • Alternatively, you can ask them to elaborate their answers during normal conversations such as why do they like this dish.
    • This can be practiced every 3 days or weekly to prevent any fatigue
  • A few days before the oral exam:
    • Do a timed practice with your child so that it can stimulate the actual exam.
    • It would be better if they do it with someone they do not know.
    • You can ask your friend or someone you trust where they can play the role of the examiner for your child. This would make your child practice feeling comfortable speaking in front of strangers.
