Importance of having English Oral exam

The English oral exam are one of the easier components for your child to get as many marks as possible.

If this component is easy and your child just needs to talk, why is it so important that it is still being tested?

And why isn’t every student scoring well?

Having the English oral exam trains students to speak better and prepares them for the workforce.

Obviously, speaking well is required in presenting ideas, pitching proposals, or delivering speeches. Speaking well enhances your child’s ability to captivate and engage audiences.

This skill is valuable in meetings, conferences, and other public speaking engagements.

Improved client and customer interactions

Speaking well is essential in client-facing roles.

It helps your child build rapport with customers, understand their needs, and provide clear and persuasive explanations about products or services.

So what should my child do to speak well and do well for the English oral exam?

Practice speaking aloud

Ask your child to stand in front of a mirror or record themselves speaking to practice their pronunciation, intonation, and overall delivery.

Focus on clarity, pacing, and appropriate use of expressions.

Rehearse with someone

Use past year O Level English oral exam questions and get your child to practice the spoken interaction part with a family member.

Alternatively, if your child has an upcoming presentation, get your child to present it to you. Make sure it is timed so that your child stays within the required limit

Keep your child updated with the latest news

Sometimes, the English oral exam will test your child on things that have happened in the news. If your child is kept updated, they will know what to say when they are asked questions during the spoken interaction.

One way for your child to stay updated is to let them watch the news, subscribe to news channels on social media or listen to the radio

Listening to podcasts & interviews

When your child listens to podcasts and interviews, they will:

  • Improve their vocabulary
  • Improve their pronunciation (helps them mimic and model the natural flow of spoken English)
  • Have a wider exposure to different speaking styles (become more attuned to variations in pronunciation)
