How to write a PSLE English narrative composition?

The PSLE English composition part carries a total mark weight of 27.5% in the English syllabus created by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB). It is made up of two parts:
– Situational writing (15 marks)
– Continuous writing (40 marks)

How well your child does in this section is based on: 

  • Language (20 Marks)
  • Content (20 Marks)

A variety of abilities are necessary for excellent composition writing, including:

  • The capacity to generate thoughts and arrange them logically
  • Express the thoughts succinctly and clearly.

Going deeper on PSLE English composition writing

More students have problems with this section so we will be focusing more on continuous writing and how to write a proper structure for PSLE English composition.

In continuous writing, your child will be required to write a composition of at least
150 words in continuous prose on a given topic.

Three pictures will be provided on the
topic offering different angles of interpretation. Your child may also come up with their own interpretation of the topic.

How to write an attention grabbing introduction?

Use a question, a quote, or a startling statistic. Something to pause the reader and prompt them to ask, “What is this about?”

The introduction can pose a query like, “Wait a minute, why does this missing cat look so familiar?”

How to write the body of the PSLE English composition?

The body of a narrative essay is where you describe the events and details of the story you are telling. Here are some tips to help you write the body of your child’s PSLE English narrative essay:

  • Start by introducing the setting and the main characters, then describe the events that unfold. Be sure to include sensory details and dialogue to make your story come alive.
    • For example, if the main character is in the park, describe the park. Is it crowded? Is there a lot of greenery? Anyone exercising nearby? Are there any events going on? What is the weather like over there?
  • Use descriptive language: Use descriptive language to help the reader imagine the events and characters in your story. Describe the sights, sounds, smells, and emotions of the events in your story.
    • Your child can use see, smell, hear to describe their PSLE English composition setting.
    • If the character is in a park, they can describe the park full of people ranging from families to groups of elderly (See). Chatting and playful screaming can be heard from the playground a few steps away (hear). The gentle floral aroma and the fresh air makes the character feel energized and refreshed (smell).
  • Create suspense: Use the body of your essay to create suspense and keep the reader engaged. You can do this by building up to a climax or by using foreshadowing to hint at what is to come.

How to write a conclusion for PSLE English composition?

A strong ending should provide the reader a sense of closure and ensure that they understand your main ideas.

With reference to the 2020 PSLE English composition question ‘’missing cat’’ photo, you can conclude if the cat was found or not.

Your child should have a strong foundation for your composition with all these easy adjustments and suggestions. Don’t forget to pay attention to the particular guidelines for the PSLE English composition, like the word limit.
