What is a S.M.A.R.T Goal?

S.M.A.R.T goals are goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

This acronym is a useful tool for goal setting that are clear, realistic, and achievable. Here is what each letter of the acronym stands for:

S.M.A.R.T goals help your child break down larger goals into smaller, more manageable steps and achieve a sense of progress and achievement along the way.

Goal setting step #2: Understand the purpose of the goal

Your child should understand why setting this goal is important and what they hope to achieve by reaching it.

During planning, their goal should be aligned with their personal values and interests, and it should be something that they are motivated to pursue.

For example, the goal is to have AL1 for their PSLE math exams so that it can help them go to their dream secondary school

Goal setting step #3: Develop an action plan

Once the goal is identified, your child should develop a clear action plan for achieving it.

This should include specific steps or milestones that need to be completed, along with a timeline for each step.

For example, if your child has a goal like this:

Step 1: Assess their current proficiency levels by doing exam paper and determine specific areas for improvement (eg: comprehension open ended / compo writing / grammar)

Step 2: Create a daily study schedule, setting aside at least 30 minutes each day for English revision

Step 3: Develop a list of learning materials and resources to use, such as assessment books that focus on the specific problem areas

Step 4: Set achievable goals for each week or month, such as learning 20 new vocabulary words, writing a paragraph or essay.

Step 5: Seek feedback from their English teachers or tutors to identify areas that need improvement and track progress.
