school holiday revision: effective o level 1 week revision strategy article intro picture

Attention parents and students! The March school holiday is upon us, you know what this means…

This is your chance to seize the moment and dive into intensive revision. But with 1 week of school holiday, how should students make every second count? Our extensive guide has it all figured out!

School holiday day 1 & 2 – Subject Review and Goal Setting

Most parents and students would just go ahead and drill their practice papers during the first 2 days.

However, your child would have a more targeted practice and effective revision session if they plan first.

You and your child should start by reviewing your child’s subjects and exam schedule. Look at their WA1 scores, what do they need to work on?

Discuss and think about which subjects they should focus on during this 1 week holiday. Then set goals for each subject. What does your child want to achieve by the end of the week?

Once these 2 things are done, they can start to gather their materials like textbooks, past year exam papers and class notes

School holiday day 3 & 4 – Intensive Study Sessions

During these 2 days, your child can allocate 2-3 hours for each subject.

To avoid feeling stressed and burned out, they can break their revision sessions into 25-30 minute study blocks followed by 5-10 minute breaks.

During school holiday revision, your child needs to:

  • Cover key topics
  • Redo questions they got wrong
  • Make and review class notes
  • Focus on understanding concepts rather than memorization
  • Consult their teacher or tutor if possible. If not, they can make a note and do the consultation after the holiday

School holiday day 5 – Active Recall and Self-Testing

On this day, your child can create flashcards or summary sheets for important topics and subjects. Especially the ones that require memorization or has heavy theory. For example, humanities subjects

You can also test your child’s knowledge by asking them to explain the concepts to you.

School holiday day 6 & 7 –  Mock Exams and Review

It is time to put their revision to the test! Your child can use a new past year exam paper and simulate exam conditions.

Alternatively, they can create a new “exam paper” with all the questions they got wrong. This checks whether your child fully understands the concept or not.

During this school holiday, your child should focus on exam time management and adjust their pacing. After completing the paper, they should review answers, and identify any mistakes.

When school reopens, they can consult their teachers again.

Does your child need additional subject guidance before their next exam?

WA2 is approaching and if your child is still barely passing or failing in certain subjects, there is still time to change that.
